Radiation Safety
The Radiation Safety Program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is dedicated to protecting University personnel, the public, and the environment from unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. The program ensures that all radiation-related activities comply with federal and state regulations and maintain exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
The main areas of emphasis include:
- Maintaining Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring all radiation-related activities meet federal and state safety requirements and follow University policies.
- Minimizing Radiation Exposure: Implementing ALARA principles through monitoring, training, and operational controls to reduce exposure risks for personnel and the campus community.
- Managing Radioactive Materials: Overseeing the safe acquisition, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials used in research and instructional activities.
- Conducting Safety Evaluations: Performing routine area surveys, inspections, and dose monitoring to verify safe conditions and document compliance.
- Providing Training and Support: Delivering required radiation safety training, assisting departments with permit applications, and ensuring new personnel meet safety requirements.
- Overseeing Waste Handling: Coordinating proper procedures for solid and liquid radioactive waste, including tracking, logging, and compliant disposal practices.
