Center for Energy and Sustainability 

The Center for Energy and Sustainability advances the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship with the following as its main emphasis areas: 

• To promote sustainability practices that meet the needs of the current campus community while preserving resources for future generations, ensuring that environmental, economic, and social impacts are balanced to support long-term campus resilience and student success. 

• To educate and empower students, faculty, staff, and community members to lead sustainability initiatives, fostering awareness, participation, and shared commitment for shaping a positive environmental legacy on campus and aligning with MTSU’s commitment to student and civic engagement. 

• To provide sustainability guidance and consulting across campus, advising students, faculty, and staff on sustainability projects and administering the Sustainable Campus Fee in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs to strengthen campus partnerships and experiential learning. 

• To manage campus recycling programs to maximize material recovery and minimize landfill waste, partnering with vendors to expand recycling services on campus, where possible and promoting end-use transparency.  

• To lead by example by prioritizing energy and utility management, sustainable building design, and responsible resource stewardship, leveraging engineering innovation to support a more efficient, resilient, and environmentally conscious campus environment. 

• To pursue a long-term vision of a data-informed, technology-driven sustainable campus, enhancing energy efficiency, operational performance, and environmental stewardship through continuous innovation and strategic planning. 

• To coordinate and track sustainability efforts across MTSU, sharing success stories and fostering collaboration among departments and stakeholders to strengthen community engagement and cultivate sustainable partnerships.
