Industrial Hygiene & Lab Safety
Operating under Environmental Health & Safety, the Industrial Hygiene & Laboratory Safety Group ensures safe research, teaching, and work environments by overseeing compliance, hazard control, inspection programs, and regulated material management across campus.
The Industrial Hygiene & Laboratory Safety Group provides the following primary services:
- Conducts industrial hygiene monitoring and inspections, including asbestos surveys/abatement coordination, indoor air quality assessments, noise evaluations, and routine safety inspections.
- Manages biosafety and laboratory safety compliance, ensuring proper handling, storage, and operation practices for biological, chemical, and physical lab hazards.
- Oversees radiation safety programs, maintaining regulatory compliance and ensuring exposure protection consistent with ALARA principles.
- Provides hazardous and universal waste management, including collection, transport, and proper disposal in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Develops and maintains campus safety and operational manuals, including policies for biosafety, chemical hygiene, laboratory procedure, radiation handling, and general campus safety standards.
- Coordinates approval processes for regulated activities, including radiation use permits, human research review (IRB), and animal research compliance (IACUC).
